Family R&R May 1-3, 2026

  • May 25, 2026
  • by dottietheadmin

Thirteen families from the SRUs at Ft. Sam Houston and Ft. Hood arrived in Fredericksburg for a weekend of family fun and relaxation.  Friday’s dinner was scheduled to be hosted by The Bridge Church.  However, due to storms and heavy rain, dinner was moved to the Campo Azul restaurant to allow everyone to arrive as they safely could. It was close to 9pm when the last arrivals finished their meal and left for the hotel.  Saturday was beautiful! The sun was out and temperatures were mild encouraging guests to explore the town, museums and art galleries. Lunch was provided by this ministry at Hondo’s on Main restaurant. Everyone was on their own until dinner at Jesus Christ of Lader Day Saints church.  Numerous members and children were present to greet and help the families feel welcome.  The children got a surprise when Darth Vador appeared. They attacked him with “balloon sabers” and shrieks.  It was a fun night for everyone, and no one left hungry.

This was Chaplain Hatcher’s last event with Wounded Warriors at Nebo because he was being reassigned to Ft. Leonard Wood. He will be greatly missed by both the SRU patients and this ministry.

Some pictures from this weekend can be view by selecting “Photos” at the top of the page or you can go to https://dlroberts.zenfolio.com/f575051704   to see all that were taken.

We thank David Roberts for taking and editing the photos for this event and numerous others.

1Q26 Newsletter

  • May 25, 2026

This newsletter covers the one event we had in the first quarter of 2026.  We have reduced the number of events due to the lower number of patients in the SRU.  While fewer patients is really good, it makes the number of warriors attending events really low.  Also in this newsletter you will see an article addressing the ministry’s need for volunteers willing to take on leadership roles.  If you live in the Fredericksburg or a close community, please consider volunteering for one or more of the leadership roles.  If interested you can contact one of the people listed at the bottom of the article for further information.  Click on this link  1Q26 to read or download the newsletter.

Enchanted Rock 4/9/2026

Eight hardy souls from Ft. Sam Houston Soldier Recovery Unit arrived at Enchanted Rock State Park on a cool April morning for an adventure.  After a snack of breakfast burritos, donuts, juice, etc. they headed out to explore.  On the way up everyone stopped for a rest and the chaplain seized the opportunity to share a devotional.

Later at lunch in Fredericksburg, one of the warriors shared the beautiful pictures he had taken including a video of a large snake who seemed bored with the humans and slithered away.

To see all photos from this event go to the top of the home page and click on Photos or you can go to Zenfolio | Dave Roberts | ER 2026 04

We thank all of the volunteers who helped with this event and all of you who support this ministry financially.

God Bless You All!!

Spring Family R&R

  • July 11, 2025July 11, 2025
  • by dottietheadmin

This is a weekend to get away from the stress of everyday life and relax, spend quality time with your family.  We consider a family as a single person, a couple and a single or couple with children below the age of 18.  Guests can check into the hotel beginning at 4pm.  Dinner will be served around 6pm.  From there you are free to do as you like.  There is nothing planned until Saturday dinner.  Saturday breakfast will be at the hotel. Lunch will be at a restaurant yet to be determined. It’s your choice whether you join us for a free lunch or go out on your own.  We ask that everyone attend dinner on both Friday and Saturday nights.  The churches hosting you have put in a lot of work preparing the meals, so we ask you to honor them by attending.

Lodging and meals are provided for this event.  Attendance is limited to 15 families and because hotel rooms will only sleep 6, maximum family size has to be 6.

More specific information will be provided as it becomes available.

If you are an active military patient in treatment or transition at Fort Sam Houston and want to participate in this event, contact Chaplain Hatcher, Fort Sam or your Unit Leader.

Medically retired veterans are welcome to fill out the form above to let us know you want to attend. However, active-duty personnel have priority so you will be wait listed and notified whether there is a vacant spot or cancellation.

This event is for active duty SRU patients in treatment or transition.  It will take place at Enchanted Rock Wildlife area.  It is one of the warrior’s favorite places in this area.  Light breakfast snacks will be provided when participants arrive.  They are on their own to hike the rock, explore the caves or hike around the rock.  Those who are unable to hike can just enjoy the beauty of God’s creation and bird watch.  Climbing Enchanted Rock works up an appetite so following the hike everyone will meet for lunch.

Interested in participating?  Contact Chaplain Hatcher, Fort Sam Houston SRU, or your unit leader.  Attendance is limited to 20.

Christmas in Fredericksburg

  • by dottietheadmin

The annual Family Christmas R&R is one of our favorite events. Lodging and meals are provided by Wounded Warriors at Nebo.

Dinner will be served in the Nimitz Ball Room at 5 pm by the Nimitz Rotary Club.  Five (5) may seem a bit early but that is only an hour before the parade starts.  At 6 pm Friday night guests can enjoy Fredericksburg’s beautiful lighted parade from chairs set up in front of the museum.  After the parade they can also enjoy other special events at Market Platz such as ice skating.  Saturday participants can explore the town and the numerous art galleries at their leisure.  They also have free access to the Pioneer Museum and the Museum of the Pacific War.

Breakfast will be at the hotel.  Time and location of lunch and dinner will be provided when they are available.  Families should all attend the dinners as they are hosted by churches who have put a lot of work in preparation for them.

Attendance is limited to 15 families. Hotel rooms will only sleep 6 so family size is limited to 6. A family can be a single person, a couple, and a couple or single with children below 18 years old.

Active duty patients will be given priority when signing up to attend.  However, if there are not 15 families who want to come then the extra rooms are available to Medically Retired Veterans.  Any veteran wishing to attend must fill out the request above this announcement and they will be put on a waiting list.

Sign up for Active Duty patients is though the Chaplain Hatcher , SRU chaplain at Fort Sam Houston.
