Family Holiday R&R, Dec. 5-7, 2025

On Friday, December 5th, twelve families from Ft. Sam Houston gathered in the Nimitz Ballroom for a delicious prime rib and chicken dinner provided and served by the Nimitz Rotary Club, followed by desserts courtesy of Journey Church. After the meal, everyone headed outside to enjoy the lighted Christmas parade from reserved seating. When the parade wrapped up, many families explored the activities at Market Platz.

Saturday was a free day for families to enjoy Fredericksburg at their own pace. Most eventually met up at Hondo’s on Main for lunch, where they swapped stories about ice skating, Kinderfest, and the many other activities happening around town.

That evening, the First Baptist Church hosted a potluck dinner featuring everything from chicken casserole and mac and cheese to enchiladas and an impressive spread of desserts. My personal favorite was the pecan praline bundt cake—although the apple pie gave it some competition.

As dinner wound down, church members handed each of the 23 children a ticket. One by one, numbers were called and each child chose a gift from under the Christmas tree. The final drawing was for a handmade quilt donated by a church member. Then it was the adults’ turn, with drawings for $100 gift cards from various San Antonio businesses. Every family received a gift card, and every child went home with a present.

Just as the excitement settled, Sunshine the Clown arrived and delighted “kids” of all ages with a lively magic show, engaging the children as eager helpers throughout her performance.

A few photos have been posted in this website photo album which you can access by clicking on Photos at the top of this page.  However, all photos from the planned activities can be viewed and downloaded at Zenfolio | Dave Roberts | 2025 Dec .  Parade photos at Zenfolio | Dave Roberts | Christmas Parade 2025

Veteran’s Car Show

  • December 3, 2025December 3, 2025
  • by dottietheadmin

Kerrville VA Medical Center Nursing Home is home to several disabled veterans.  Most of them have no family to visit and can’t get out much.  Wounded Warriors at Nebo has been working on projects with the residents.  The latest one was putting together car models for a “Car Show”.  Over the course of several weeks, eleven cars were completed.  We are not allowed to photograph the veterans therefore the volunteers who assisted the veterans with the project are pictured with the “Car Show”.

If you live in the Kerrville area consider stopping by to say hello and brighten a veteran’s day.

Season Kickoff, Kayaking the San Marcos River

  • September 13, 2025
  • by dottietheadmin

On September 11 the 2025–2026 season began with a splash—literally—as nine patients from the Soldiers Recovery Unit at Fort Sam Houston joined volunteers from Wounded Warriors at Nebo Ministry and Veterans Adventure Therapy aka Olympic Outdoor Center for a day of kayaking on the San Marcos River.

We gathered at Kirby Lane Café in San Marcos, where the morning began with a delicious brunch and lively conversation. Spirits were high, and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect—God truly gifted us a day made for adventure.

After brunch, we ported canoes from the restaurant to the riverbank. Life vests were secured, safety tips shared, and soon our group was gliding down the river. Those of us not kayaking headed to the nearby park, home to two scenic waterfalls. While waiting for the group to arrive, we watched children and adults tube over the falls and body surf in the rapids—pure joy in motion.

When our kayakers reached the falls, two volunteers led the way, navigating the first drop and positioning themselves below the second to assist others. We quickly learned there were many ways to tackle the falls:

  • Landing safely in the rapids and gliding through the second drop
  • Drifting around and descending the second drop backwards
  • Getting stuck on the rocks at the entrance
  • Attempting a backward descent and flipping on landing

Thanks to our quick-thinking volunteers, even the most adventurous paddlers were met with support and encouragement. It was a day filled with laughter, courage, and connection.

Events like these remind us of the healing power of nature, community, and shared experience. Whether paddling through rapids or cheering from the shore, we were all part of something meaningful.

Stay tuned for more adventures this season—we’re just getting started.

River Adventure 4 March 25

  • May 26, 2025

The river sparkled under the clear sky, the gentle current offering both tranquility and adventure.  Fourteen warriors from the SRU gathered in San Marcos for a day of camaraderie, relaxation and outdoor therapy. As they navigated the winding waters, the warmth of the sun and beauty of the natural surroundings provided the perfect backdrop for reflection and renewal.  Wheather paddling through the scenic landscape or simply enjoying the fresh air, the day served as a meaningful escape, a reminder of resilience, and a celebration of strength.

Ben Kvanli, Olympic Outdoor Center owner, provided the kayaks and support.  Breakfast and snacks were provided by Wounded Warriors at Nebo.  The awesome photos catching incredible moments were taken by David Roberts.  You can view some of the photos by following this link  https://wwnebo.org/photos/wppaspec/oc1/lnen/cv0/ab79/pt2132   or you can go to David’s site at http://dlroberts.zenfoil.com/201815397     to see and/or download all 170.

Team Building

One of the creative ways to teach people to work together is to put them in a locked room where they must find clues to open the door.  The chaplain took a group of 21 patients, cadre and healthcare workers to Extreme Escape Room in San Antonio.  After breakfast at the First Watch Restaurant, they walked to the escape room where they were split into teams.  Each team had 60 minutes to explore and collect all the clues required to exit their designated rooms before time ran out. The engaging and interactive experience fostered teamwork and problem-solving skills.  Chaplain Hatcher shared that everyone had a great time, marking the day as both enjoyable and meaningful for all involved.
