Chaplin Hatcher brought SRU patients, nurses and case managers to Louis Hayes Park in Kerrville, TX for a day of fun on the water. Upon arrival they were greeted by Wounded Warriors at Nebo volunteers with breakfast tacos and other snack items. Then they grabbed a kayak and headed for a leisurely trip on the Guadalupe River. Some even explored the 6 mile hiking trail. Then it was lunch time after which they enjoyed the park for a while and headed back to Fort. Sam Houston. Ben Kvanli, Olympic Outdoor Sports, St. Markus furnished all the kayaks and some much needed instructions. First Baptist Church donated the delicious breakfast tacos.

Day Event

Team Building

  • February 24, 2024
  • by dottietheadmin

The chaplain requested the February 9th event for cadre and staff be a Team Building event.  What better way to build a team than to lock them in a room where they have to work together to get out?  Forty one (41) soldiers met at an Escape Room in San Antonio for a day out learning to work together and hopefully in the process relieve some of the stress of their job(s). These soldiers work directly with the patients in treatment and/or transition. They make sure medications are correct and taken; that doctor’s appointments are made and kept; that physical therapy is attended, etc.  In essence the cadre & staff are emotionally going through the same things as their patients.

Teams of 5 took turns going through the escape rooms.

Lunch was enjoyed at a local restaurant within walking distance of the escape rooms.

Feedback from the chaplain was very positive.  He said everyone enjoyed the day.  It helped relieve their work-related stress, improved morale while learning or sharpening skills required to work as a team.

Thank goodness Wounded Warriors at Nebo was able to provide an opportunity to have some fun!!

Participants at lunch and sharing experiences.

2024 – To Do List

  • December 29, 2023December 29, 2023

In three days we will be starting a New Year.  It’s a perfect time to take inventory of ourselves and our life and make changes where needed.  Probably the most popular change people make is to take better care of themselves, i.e., exercise, diet, etc.  But what about your relationship with your family or friends?  What about your spiritual health?  I’m sure there are many other areas that can be addressed.

Take some time to reflect on your life and the blessings you have and how you can bless those around you.  It will take some effort on your part but in the long run the impact on your life will be worth it.

From WOUNDED WARRIORS AT NEBO!!

See you next year !!

Christmas Celebration

  • December 23, 2023
  • by dottietheadmin

This time of year is filled with excitement, parties with family and friends, shopping, over eating and much more.  So much so that it is easy to forget what all the celebration is about. Perhaps you’ve heard the slogan “Jesus is the Reason for the Season”. I don’t know the origin but according to scripture it’s true.

“The Savior-yes, the Messiah, the Lord-has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David!” Luke 2:11 (NLT)

“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:16 & 17 (NLT)

So when you’re opening gifts and celebrating, remember to thank God for the most precious gift of all, Jesus our Lord.

Wounded Warriors at Nebo wish all of you the gift of LOVE, the gift of PEACE, the gift of HEALTH & HAPPINESS and the gift of a WONDERFUL NEW YEAR.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Family Holiday R&R

What a perfect weekend for being outside!!  Evenings a light jacket or sweat shirt was sufficient and during the day it was warm enough that no wrap was required.  Much better than the year it was freezing.

Fifteen families joined Wounded Warriors at Nebo in Fredericksburg for kicking off the Christmas season.  Friday the annual Lighted Christmas Parade (the biggest one ever with 155 entries!) followed dinner at the Nimitz Ballroom.  The Nimitz Rotary Club cooked and hosted the dinner serving prime rib, smoked chicken, scalloped potatoes and french green beans. If guests still had room after all that there were desserts provided by the Renovators Sunday School Class, Fredericksburg UMC.  Needless to say, no one went away hungry.  After the parade, everyone scattered.  Some going to check out the ice skating and other activities at Market Platz while others headed for the hotel.

Saturday everyone was on their own until lunch at Hondo’s on Main then more exploring until dinner at St. Joseph’s Halle.  The Catholic Daughters provided a delicious meal of smoked turkey, ham and various side dishes.  And again, there were ample desserts to satisfy any sweet tooth.  There was an activity area for kids who were not interested in the “Name that Song” game.  In addition, every child was able to pick at least one gift from the tables of gifts.

This was a really good group!  Attending were both active duty and medically retired veterans.  Among them there were singles, couples, and couples with children (in fact there were 25 children).  Some of the attendees were old friends but most are new friends.

Cool and Cloudy

Thursday, 10 October 2023, was in the mid 60s and partly cloudy when the 9 soldiers arrived at Enchanted Rock.  Chaplain Hatcher from the Soldier Recovery Unit (SRU) at Fort Sam Houston had brought patients from the SRU for a day of play on the “Rock”.  Getting them away from the stress they face everyday.

They were met at the Enchanted Rock pavilion by Sharon Massey and Brenda Novian who had brought lots of breakfast items, fruit, cookies, etc.  All made the hike to the summit most with a stop to enjoy the views or rest now and then.

Everyone worked up an appetite, so when all were back at the pavilion, they headed to Hondo’s on Main for lunch. By then the sun had broken through warming it up slightly.  During lunch there was lots of conversation sharing experiences.  For desert Sharon suggested ice cream at Clear River Ice Cream, Bakery & Deli.  About half said they were too full but the others were game.  When all was said and done, everyone got either ice cream or pastry.

Wounded Warriors at Nebo sends a special thanks for the homemade cookies made by members of the Ephraim Andrews chapter of the DAR.  There wasn’t one left! What the soldiers didn’t eat at the park they took for a snack on the way back to San Antonio.  We also thank Hondo’s who always makes us feel welcome and gives us a break on the cost.

The soldiers were gracious enough to share photos with us.  They can be viewed by following this link https://wwnebo.org/photos

Big Surprise!!

  • May 30, 2023

We’ve all heard the statement “Good things come to those who wait”.  That is exactly what happened to the Roberts Family.  They received a phone call from Homes For Heros requesting a meeting.  When they arrived at the meeting location in New Braunfels, they were greeted by a sign on a vacant lot that read “Future Home of the Roberts Family.  Needless to say they had questions.

While serving in the Gulf War and Afghanistan, J.D. Roberts sustained several injuries.  Shortly after returning home to his wife and three young children, he was T-Boned and lost a leg.  Considering the combination of war and accident injuries, they asked Tess’ mother, Heidi, to move in with them to help with JD and the children.  Since then his health has deteriorated however that hasn’t stopped him and Tess from reaching out to others struggling.  He has also given motivational speeches at schools and organizations such as Rotary International.  Needless to say the home they were buying when he left for the Gulf War isn’t wheelchair friendly.  Seven years ago they completed a Homes for Heros application but had never heard from them – – – until now.

Construction on their new five bedroom home should be completed by December.  It will be designed to accommodate J.D.’s condition.

We are so happy and excited for J.D, Tess and the entire family.

God is Good!!!

On Friday, 5 May, eleven (11) families arrived in Fredericksburg ready for a weekend of fun.  As they arrived they checked into the Inn on Baron’s Creek. Later they all gathered at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church for Dinner and to get to know each other.  During orientation they were provided with a list of things available to do during the weekend including places waiving admission. The weekend was warm enough that the pool was inviting and well used in addition to exploring some of the historical buildings and other sights on main street.  Saturday was another beautiful day.  We got to see most of the families at Gattis for lunch (the kids got $10 game tickets) and everyone ate until they couldn’t eat anymore.  Later that evening Bethany Lutheran Church hosted dinner which was followed by Bingo.  Everyone had a good time playing and seeing what prize they would get.

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped make this weekend possible!  We especially thank both Holy Ghost Lutheran and Bethany Lutheran for hosting and providing delicious meals in addition to visiting with the guests making them feel welcome.  As always, the Inn on Baron’s Creek took good care of our guests.

Once again God provided a beautiful weekend and safe travels.

Photos from the weekend can be viewed by clicking on Photos at the top of the page and selecting the album titled R&R May 5-7, 2023.
