Hiking the Rock

  • September 5, 2024September 6, 2024
  • by dottietheadmin

This event is for active duty SRU patients in treatment or transition.  It will take place at Enchanted Rock Wildlife area.  It is one of the warrior’s favorite places in this area.  Light breakfast snacks will be provided when participants arrive.  They are on their own to hike the rock, explore the caves or hike around the rock.  Those who are unable to hike can just enjoy the beauty of God’s creation and bird watch.  Climbing Enchanted Rock works up an appetite so following the hike everyone will meet at Hondo’s on Main for lunch.

Interested in participating?  Contact Chaplain Hatcher, Fort Sam Houston SRU, or Chaplain Gualiva, Fort Cavazo SRU or your unit leader.  Attendance is limited to 20.

The Guadalupe River in Kerrville is beautiful.  The Louise Hays Park is just off Sidney Baker Rd at 202 Thompson Dr.  It has a 6 mile walking trail, lots of shade, kayaking and fishing opportunities.  However, you need to let us know in advance if you plan to fish.  In addition, there is a Splash Pad where you can cool down if it’s hot or you just want to play in it.

Lunch will be at a pavilion in the park.  Instructions for ordering your lunch will be included in an email of information you will receive after signing up to attend.

This event is limited to 15 people.

Family Holiday R&R

What a perfect weekend for being outside!!  Evenings a light jacket or sweat shirt was sufficient and during the day it was warm enough that no wrap was required.  Much better than the year it was freezing.

Fifteen families joined Wounded Warriors at Nebo in Fredericksburg for kicking off the Christmas season.  Friday the annual Lighted Christmas Parade (the biggest one ever with 155 entries!) followed dinner at the Nimitz Ballroom.  The Nimitz Rotary Club cooked and hosted the dinner serving prime rib, smoked chicken, scalloped potatoes and french green beans. If guests still had room after all that there were desserts provided by the Renovators Sunday School Class, Fredericksburg UMC.  Needless to say, no one went away hungry.  After the parade, everyone scattered.  Some going to check out the ice skating and other activities at Market Platz while others headed for the hotel.

Saturday everyone was on their own until lunch at Hondo’s on Main then more exploring until dinner at St. Joseph’s Halle.  The Catholic Daughters provided a delicious meal of smoked turkey, ham and various side dishes.  And again, there were ample desserts to satisfy any sweet tooth.  There was an activity area for kids who were not interested in the “Name that Song” game.  In addition, every child was able to pick at least one gift from the tables of gifts.

This was a really good group!  Attending were both active duty and medically retired veterans.  Among them there were singles, couples, and couples with children (in fact there were 25 children).  Some of the attendees were old friends but most are new friends.

Cool and Cloudy

Thursday, 10 October 2023, was in the mid 60s and partly cloudy when the 9 soldiers arrived at Enchanted Rock.  Chaplain Hatcher from the Soldier Recovery Unit (SRU) at Fort Sam Houston had brought patients from the SRU for a day of play on the “Rock”.  Getting them away from the stress they face everyday.

They were met at the Enchanted Rock pavilion by Sharon Massey and Brenda Novian who had brought lots of breakfast items, fruit, cookies, etc.  All made the hike to the summit most with a stop to enjoy the views or rest now and then.

Everyone worked up an appetite, so when all were back at the pavilion, they headed to Hondo’s on Main for lunch. By then the sun had broken through warming it up slightly.  During lunch there was lots of conversation sharing experiences.  For desert Sharon suggested ice cream at Clear River Ice Cream, Bakery & Deli.  About half said they were too full but the others were game.  When all was said and done, everyone got either ice cream or pastry.

Wounded Warriors at Nebo sends a special thanks for the homemade cookies made by members of the Ephraim Andrews chapter of the DAR.  There wasn’t one left! What the soldiers didn’t eat at the park they took for a snack on the way back to San Antonio.  We also thank Hondo’s who always makes us feel welcome and gives us a break on the cost.

The soldiers were gracious enough to share photos with us.  They can be viewed by following this link https://wwnebo.org/photos
